Abstract

Cefixime is a semi-synthetic β-lactam antibiotic, a third-generation cephalosporin for oral use, both in children (registration from 6 months of age) and in adults. It has a strong bactericidal effect by inhibiting the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall. The spectrum of activity is Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Proteus mirabilis. Clinical indications for the use of cefixime in children are community acquired pneumonia, lower urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis. The data from clinical trials clearly show the high effectiveness of the antibiotic in children and adolescents, while demonstrating high safety and rare side effects (mainly gastrointestinal symptoms). Due to the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, the antibiotic can be administered once a day, regardless of meals.

This article describes three common use cases of cefixime in children. Children treated for pyelonephritis, community-acquired pneumonia, and acute otitis media are shown. Efficacy, safety, bioavailability, good taste, and an easy dosing regimen make cefixime an appropriate antibiotic option in children.
