Abstract

Omeprazole was the first proton pump inhibitor introduced into therapy. The drug is commonly used in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract associated with the secretion of hydrochloric acid. The mechanism of action of omeprazole is based on the inhibition of the final phase of hydrochloric acid production. The effect of administration occurs rapidly, within 1 hour, and the blocking of hydrochloric acid secretion persists for about 72 hours. Due to its effectiveness, simple dosing and long-lasting therapeutic effect, omeprazole has gained a significant advantage over H2 receptor antagonists (famotidine, ranitidine). It is recommended in GERD therapy, gastric and duodenal ulcers, complications of NSAIDs and Zollinger-Elison disease, among others. The drug is safe, can be used from the first year of life, also in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and does not require dose change in seniors. The article discusses in detail the dosage principles and benefits of omeprazole.
