Abstract

The results of the ONTARGET trial have demonstrated telmisartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, is equally effective as ramipril, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, in reducing the risk of cardiovascular events in a broad cross-section of high-risk cardiovascular patients without congestive heart failure. There was no additional risk reduction benefit achieved and a higher discontinuation rate if telmisartan and ramipril are combined.
