The role of group B vitamins and uridine monophosphate – nutrients in the treatment of neuropathic pain Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
Neuropathic pain, which can commonly be called pain of the damaged nerve, is a symptom that appears in the course of numerous disease entities. A typical feature of neuropathic pain is poor response to standard pain killers. Treatment of diseases in which neuropathic pain occurs is long-term due to slow nerve regeneration. Moreover, in many cases full regeneration of the nervous system is impossible, which causes the pain to accompany the patient for the rest of his life.
Due to the ineffectiveness of typical analgesic treatment and chronicity of diseases with neuropathic pain, many doctors and patients use nutrients to support the regeneration process and improve the effectiveness of current treatment. Supplementation with vitamins and other nutrients should be taken into account in patients with neuropathic pain due to many years of experience in the use of this group of drugs and their good tolerance. In addition, one should remember about the adverse effect of vitamin deficiencies on the functions of the nervous system with a high prevalence of vitamin deficiencies in the elderly and people with selected disease entities, including alcoholism and digestive tract diseases.
