Devic`s disease – neuromyelitis optica Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
Neuromyelitis optica is a rare, acute inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system formerly considered as a variant of multiple sclerosis. The discovery of specific autoantibodies reacting with aquaporin 4 and the development of diagnostic criteria revealed that neuromyelitis optica is disease with separate entity. Diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica requires considerable clinical experience, because initial symptoms may resemble multiple sclerosis. Although sometimes clinical manifestations of neuromyelitis optica are similar to multiple sclerosis, the clinical management is different. Therapy with interferon β, natalizumab and fingolimod, used in multiple sclerosis, in neuromyelitis optica can be disadventageous or even exacerbates symptoms of the disease.
