Dandruff and active ingredients used in antidandruff shampoos – a review Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
Dandruff is a chronic disease with a recurrent nature. It is considered part of the spectrum of seborrheic dermatitis. The pathogenesis of dandruff emphasizes the significant role of disruptions in the scalp microbiome (particularly the proliferation of fungi from the Malassezia spp. genus), the influence of androgens, and changes in sebum composition. Dandruff usually presents mildly, and anti-dandruff shampoos are typically a sufficient therapeutic option. Topical ciclopirox olamine is the drug of choice for treating dandruff. Additionally, attention is drawn to avoiding triggers such as overheating or overly aggressive care and using mild care products. In rare cases, when topical treatment does not yield the expected results, systemic treatment may be required.
