Cefixime – 3rd generation oral cephalosporin Review article

Abstract
Cefixime is a semi-synthetic β-lactam antibiotic, 3rd generation cephalosporin for p.o. It has a bactericidal effect, the mechanism of action is to inhibit the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Spectrum of activity: Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Proteus mirabilis. Indications for the use of cefixime are discussed: treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in adults, adolescents and children after 6 months of age. Indications for adult patients: exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, inflammation of the lower urinary tract, pyelonephritis, otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis. The article describes three cases of the use of cefixime in adults suffering from chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis and urinary tract infection.
