Abstract

Cardiogenic shock complicates 6–10% of all cases of STEMI and remains a leading cause of death, with hospital mortality rates approaching 50%. Management of cardiogenic shock in patients with acute myocardial infarction includes haemodynamic stability, achieved with medical therapy, emergent revascularization and mechanical circulatory support. IABP (intra-aortic balloon pumping) counterpulsation is the most widely used mechanical support for the treatment of cardiogenic shock, but new data shows, that IABP is not effective in patient with STEMI with cardiogenic shock who are undergoing primary PCI. In that article, indication, contraindication for IABP, complication of this method and results of new clinical study with IABP are discussed.
