Abstract
During the last congress in Munich, the European Society of Cardiology presented the new version of the ESC Guidelines published in 2007 concerning valvular heart disease. The changes were introduced due to the development of percutaneous interventional techniques and they are mainly related to patients with aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. The Guidelines introduce Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and percutaneous edge-to-edge mitral valve repair. The recommendations concerning the surgical treatment in patients with enlargement of ascending aorta were also changed. The Guidelines emphasize the significance of a ‘heart team’ in the decision-making process.
