Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is inflammatory, autoimmune, connective tissue disease characterized by destruction of small and medium joints and extra-articular organ involvement, including the cardiovascular system. This group of patients are prone to develop pericarditis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, valve diseases and arrhythmia. Heart and cardiovascular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis are common and associated with an increased mortality compared with the general population. Therefore, right assessment of cardiovascular disease risk factors, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular complications is extremely important in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
