The role of OM-85 BV in preventing recurrent acute tonsillitis in children Commentary
Main Article Content
Abstract
Recurrent acute tonsillitis is a very common disorder among school-age children and teenagers. It is generally defined as 3 episodes of tonsillitis in the preceding year, 5 episodes in the preceding 2 years or 7 episodes in the preceding 3 years. Renal, joints or cardiac complications may occur as a result of recurrent tonsils inflammation. Moreover, tonsils no longer fulfill its defensive function in the organism. Recurrent acute tonsillitis may be treated surgically by removing the tonsils (tonsillectomy) or pharmacologically using antibiotics and immunomodulators. The best-studied and most widely used of immunomodulators is a bacterial lysate in the form of an oral multivalent vaccine OM-85. The bacterial lysate used in children with recurrent acute tonsillitis causes a significant decrease in the incidence of acute episodes and reduces the amount of tonsillectomies.
