Oxcarbazepine – psychiatrist point of view. Questions and answers Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
Oxcarbazepine is blocking voltage-dependent sodium and calcium channels. The same mechanism has other antiepileptic drugs effective in bipolar disorder. For this reason, scientific societies indicate oxcarbazepine as an alternative to lithium or valproate (APA 2002) and recommend instead of carbamazepine (Texan algorithm 2000). The daily doses used in randomized studies (up to 2400 mg) were effective and in most cases well tolerated.
