Abstract

Exposure to microorganisms, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic is necessary for correct function of the immune system and leads to properly balanced function of Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes. Contacts with pathogens, including multicellular parasites, may result in the preferential development of either Th1- or Th2-type immunity. In most allergies, Th2-mediated reactions and overproduction of IgE is the underlying cause of the disease. Therefore, in prevention or treatment of some allergic disorders, application of bacteria, their products or microbial elements, specifically triggering Th1-mediated response, can be beneficial.
