The prevalence of specific IgE antibodies against nuts components in adults

Abstract

Food allergy affects Europe’s 11–26 million people. A particular challenge for allergists in the XXI century is allergy to nuts. It applies to 1.3% adults. Under the colloquial notion of allergy to nuts, hides two diseases, allergy to tree nuts, and peanut allergy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the IgE antibodies profile against nuts components in adults with suspected food allergy. The study was conducted at the Department of Allergology, Clinical Immunology and Internal Medicine in Bydgoszcz. The study was retrospective. 136 people were classified to study. The ImmunoCap ISAC test was performed to all patients. The antibodies against nut components were detected in 43 patients. Antibodies against tree nuts components were detected in all patients and peanut components in 2/3 subjects. In 43 respondents obtained 12 allergy profiles. In 35 patients antibodies against components responsible for cross-reaction with birch pollen were detected. In 17 patients antibodies against components responsible for anaphylaxis were detected and 60% of detected proteins belonged to walnut.
