Report from the ESMO Conference on Sarcoma and GIST, 9–10 March 2012, Milan, Italy Meeting Proceedings

Abstract
In 9–10 March 2012, Milan (Italy), the conference organized by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) took place. The main topic of the conference was sarcomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). This conference has been organized since 2008 and currently there were more than three hundred attendees interested in the field of sarcomas. Among the invited speakers there were world leaders in oncology, surgery, radiotherapy, pathology, molecular biology and radiology, dealing with issues related to sarcomas and GIST. The most important topic of this conference were the histological and molecular aspects of soft tissue sarcomas and GIST, clinical management and current recommendations. It was stressed, the increasing clinical need for a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas and GIST, and the important role of clinical trials and transitional research. This report presents the highlights from the meeting.
