Abstract

To treat depressive episodes, we currently have a number of antidepressants. However, a number of well-controlled clinical trials, metaanalysis and practical clinical studies have found that only a minority of patients with depression remits following antidepressant treatment. Moreover, antidepressants are ineffective or hazardous in bipolar depression. There have been some treatment approaches to overcome such a shortage of antidepressant efficacy. Recently, second generation antipsychotics (SGAs), especially olanzapine and quetiapine have clearly demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of depression both in unipolar and bipolar patients. This comprehensive review provides an overview of the clinical trial data of SGAs for treating depressive episodes and pharmacological issues raised in the use of SGA therapy in clinical practice.
