Abstrakt
Metformina oprócz działania przeciwcukrzycowego, zmniejszającego oporność na insulinę, ma szereg dodatkowych działań, m.in.: zmniejsza ryzyko powikłań sercowo-naczyniowych, wpływa na redukcję masy ciała, ma korzystny profil lipidowy, obniża ryzyko rozwoju cukrzycy u osób ze stanem przedcukrzycowym. W zaleceniach Polskiego Towarzystwa Diabetologicznego rekomenduje się zastosowanie metforminy jako leku pierwszego wyboru w leczeniu cukrzycy typu 2.
