Can acute rhinosinusitis be cured in 4 weeks? Preliminary conclusions of PROSINUS study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Acute rhinosinusitis is an increasing healthcare problem, still challenging for appropriate specialists. The aim of the PROSINUS studies is the analysis of the advisability of conducted diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the practices of general practitioners and ENT specialists in acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) therapy. Moreover, the issues of the degree of execution of EPOS 2005 applications and guidelines, incidence of possible complications of ARS, influence of ARS on patients’ quality of life, and socioeconomic aspect of the disease, were addressed in the study. It was demonstrated that during the first four weeks of ARS therapy 82,8% of patients were cured and median treatment duration was 13,7 days. High treatment efficacy was achieved using monotherapy with Cyclamen europaeum extract-containing preparation. The use of antibiotic therapy in the early stage of ARS treatment did not affect treatment efficacy in a significant manner. The most recent results of the PROSINUS research program were presented on XXII Congress of European Rhinological Society ERS in June, 2008, which gathered on Crete more than 2000 experts from all over the world.
