Dynamics of alder and birch pollen seasons in Szczecin and Warsaw (2008–2010)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the dynamics of pollen seasons of alder and birch in the cities of Szczecin and Warsaw in the years 2008-2010. Measurements were performed by the volumetric method (Burkard and Lanzoni pollen sampler). Pollen season was defined as the period in which 98% of the annual total catch occurred. Seasonal Pollen Index (SPI) was estimated as the annual sum of daily average pollen concentrations. The differences of pollen seasons duration were considerable. The pollen season of alder started several days (from 2 to 8) first in Szczecin than in Warsaw; these differences are inconsiderable for birch season. During the three years of study, the periods of occurrence of alder pollen in the air differs in 7 weeks of given city; in case of Betula there are only 2–4 days. In Warsaw, the highest, record airborne concentration of 1237 alder pollen grains/m3 was noted on the 23td of March in 2010; for birch 16 148 pollen grains/m3 on the 19th of April in 2010. In Szczecin statistically significant correlation was found between the pollen count of Alnus versus the relative humidity, SO2 and O3; for Betula the correlation was found between pollen and minimum air temperature and relative humidity and also O3 and PM10. The highest threat of alder and birch allergens occurred in Warsaw in 2008 and the period with pollen count over an allergenic significantly value lasted respectively 3 (Alnus) and 4.5 (Betula) weeks.
