Motivational interviewing as a supporting tool in the care of patient with schizophrenia Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
New methods of more effective ways of influencing people’s behavior in various clinical and non-clinical setting are developed. One of these methods is the motivational interviewing. According to William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, the motivational interviewing is a client-oriented, directive, and goal-oriented method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. The principles of the motivational interviewing are as follows: express empathy, develop discrepancy, avoid argumentation, roll with resistance, support self-efficacy. It is not based on the information model, and is not just information sharing, advice giving, confrontational, forceful, or guilt ridden. The motivational interviewing can play supportive role to improve adherence in psychiatric settings. In the group patients with the diagnosis of schizophrenia certain modifications of this method have to be made to overcome such problems as lack of insight, negative symptoms and cognitive deficits.
