Abstract

The nursing personnel employed at psychiatric wards encounters in their work a high level of physical and psychological stress. It results from the specific type of care provided to psychiatric patients. Stressful work may cause the burnout syndrome. This study analyses risk factors leading to the development of burnout syndrome, based on 2 inpatient psychiatric treatment centres. It includes verbal and physical aggression towards nurses, suicidal attempts of patients in the course of hospitalisation as well as external stress factors. The analysis was based on the survey results, in our own development, taking into account the factors causing the load at work.
