Abstract

Introduction: The aim was to correlate right ventricle echocardiographic parameters with age in smoking and not-smoking subjects.

Methods: The group included 310 consecutive patients aged 54,5 (18–91) years. There was 20% of current and 32,6% of former smokes.

Results: In regression models entered: for right ventricle only gender, for right atrium long axis and area only age and gender while for short axis it was gender and smoking; pulmonary artery acceleration time (Act), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and tricuspid insufficiency peak systolic gradient (TIPG) were predicted only by age; right ventricle early filling velocity (rE) was predicted only by age while early diastolic tricuspid annulus velocity (rE’) and r E/E’ ratio by age and gender.

Conclusions: Although smokers have larger right heart chambers it seems that it is mostly connected to ageing process and it is influenced by nicotine exposure only in case of RA remodeling. In females, correlating with age, decrease in TAPSE and Act and increase in TIPG was the most prominent in current smokers. As for the diastolic function of right ventricle the strongest correlations were observed in female former smokers group, suggesting rather dominant influence of ageing process.
