Abstract

ReLEx SMILE – the newest, third generation method of laser vision correction – was introduced in 2009. Corneal curvature remodeling is due to the creation of intracorneal layer, called lenticule, of thickness and shape depending on corrected visual defect. This lenticule is removed from the cornea through a small vertical incision. The operation is performed only by femtosecond laser VisuMax from Carl Zeiss Meditec. Excimer laser is not used, epithelium is not removed, corneal flap is not created. ReLEx SMILE causes fewer complications and provokes less postoperative pain. Because Bowman layer and anterior stroma are intact, the biomechanical properties and superficial corneal nerves are less compromised.
