Percutaneous angioplasty and coronary-artery bypass in severe coronary disease – whether SYNTAX trial decides of superiority of the intervention or cardiosurgery? Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article presents the new results of the SYNergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with TAXus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) study – the large randomized clinical study comparing PCI with drug eluting stents and CABG for treating patients with previously untreated three-vessel or/and left main coronary artery disease. The study population included 1800 patients randomly assigned to PCI or CABG. A noninferiority comparison of the two groups was performed for the primary end point – a major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular event. After 12 months of observation the criterion for noninferiority for PCI was not met, in large part because of an increased rate of repeat revascularisation in this group.
