Hypertension in diabetes Review article
Main Article Content
Abstract
Hypertension and diabetes often coexist as risk factors of macrovascular complications. Hypertension is a serious therapeutic problem with type 1 and 2 diabetes contributing to the incidence of strokes, myocardial infarctions, speeding up the development of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy. Stabilization of blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg helps to reduce the risk of vascular complications. The first procedure is to recommend lifestyle changes: diet, increasing physical activity, reducing alcohol and withdrawal of nicotine. However, this approach is often insufficient, pharmacotherapy becomes essential, in most cases consisting of several antihypertensive drugs.
